Get Informed

A message from DeLane, our Founder & Chief Experience Officer

Let's Chat! After years working in the niche market of hair removal, I've seen a thing or two as it pertains to servicing clients.  This includes clients that are new to The Wax Bar but not new to waxing and clients new to The Wax Bar and/or new to waxing.  In that time, I've run across most scenarios multiple times.  Most of these scenarios are surrounded by a client's preconceived notions and complete misinformation.  Out of all the information on this site, this page is by far the most important.  Information is everything! I opened The Wax Bar under the full understanding that many people would not know or be familiar with hair removal and it's processes.  I'm using, this "Get Informed" page to simply educate clients about many of our services.  It may be a stretch, but I'm going to say, this is Required Reading for each and every client to set foot into The Wax Bar whether you are new to waxing or not. Enjoy!

Waxing

PRE-WAX CHECKLIST

  • Hair should be at least 1/4 inch. The longer, the better.

  • Don’t apply creams, lotions or gels to the area being waxed the day of your appointment.

  • Don’t sunbathe 24 hours before or after your treatment. Tanning before treatment can cause the skin to lift.

  • If you have a low pain tolerance, take an aspirin or ibuprofen 30 min before your appointment to reduce discomfort.

  • Wear comfy undies, you don’t want super tight clothing irritating your freshly waxed sweet spot.

AFTER CARE CHECKLIST

  • Don’t sunbathe for 24 hours before or after your treatment. Tanning after your treatment can cause irritation and even burns.

  • No swimming pool, hot tubs or sauna for 24 hours after waxing.

  • Don’t use any products on the waxed area until the following day unless they are treatment products.

  • Keep hair follicles clean by showering immediately after exercise.

  • Moisturize the area daily..

  • Gently exfoliate at least every other day with a mitt, dry brush or sugar/sea salt scrub.

Face

BEFORE

  • DO NOT wax if you are on an acne medication such as Accutane, Differin, Retin-A or any other skin thinning or blood thinning medications. Waxing while on these medications can cause the skin to lift. Steer clear of waxing any area with varicose veins, sunburn, an STI or contagious skin infection. If you have undergone cosmetic treatments such as chemical peels you should wait at least six weeks before getting waxed.

AFTER

  • Hair growth on the face and maintenance schedules are based on client preference.  To maintain results we recommend 2-4 weeks between appointments.

Body

BEFORE

  • Hair growth is important - there should be enough hair to be able to be picked up with wax, about 1/4 inch. Although it's hard to measure how much hair is enough to be waxed, we suggest allowing the hair to grow out as long as you can stand it.  Especially if you've regularly or recently shaved, the hair will be course, stubborn and growing at different rates.  Our goal is to make sure the hair is able to be removed as cleanly as possible and growing the hair out ensures that, the longer the better.

  • DO NOT trim hair - if we need to trim the hair (which we do rarely), we will do so at the start of your service.

  • Exfoliate skin - Light exfoliating with our Body By LA - Brown Sugar Body Scrub or Body By LA - Dry Brush is the perfect way to prepare your skin for hair removal. Exfoliating has great benefits including removing dead skin cells that block the hair follicle which is the unfortunate cause of ingrown hairs.

  • Fresh and Clean - come to your appointment fresh and clean. Yes it obvious, but still worth the friendly reminder. We also have wipes available in the treatment rooms to freshen up as you get undressed.

  • Menstruating - Menstrual cycles can be quite unpredictable.  Sometimes a scheduled appointment falls on the day of an unexpected period. We leave it up to the client as to whether or not they still receive their wax.  All we ask is that you wear a clean tampon during and ensure that you are able to stay sanitary throughout the service for the protection of the professional and the room.  If you are unsure or uncomfortable with waxing during your cycle, you are more than welcome to reschedule your appointment.

  • If you have a low pain tolerance, take an aspirin or ibuprofen 30 min before your appointment to reduce discomfort.

  • Don’t sunbathe 24 hours before or after your treatment. Tanning before treatment can cause the skin to lift.

  • Unless you are an experienced waxer, it's always safe to wax a few days before a big event instead of the day of.

  • Pregnant - it's totally normal to wax throughout your pregnancy. We of course will tell you to consult your physician before you book but it's totally safe and we service pregnant women quite often.

  • BIKINI WAX STYLES - a common question is "What's the difference between bikini styles?" See chart and explanation below.

Bikini - removes the LEAST AMOUNT of hair, if you are wearing a basic brief panty, any hair that would be visible outside of the panty line is removed

G-String Bikini - if you are wearing a g-string or thong panty, hair that would be visible outside the panty line is removed

G - String Bikini Extended - if you are wearing a g-string or thong panty, hair that would be visible outside the panty line is removed; as well as the hair between the cheeks

Brazilian - removes all hair front to back including between the cheeks. A landing strip or triangle being left is optional.

DURING

  • When you come in for your appointment, for body waxing services, it's very similar to a visit to your physician.  We step out and allow you privacy to get undressed. We provide wipes to allow you to freshen up. We also provide a drape sheet to be placed over you so are not totally exposed. We take your modesty seriously and our goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible.  For such services as bikini waxes, you will be undressed from the waist down.

  •  There is a level of discomfort with body waxing.  However, the pain associated with waxing can be very much exaggerated. It has been our experience that most people who have had unfavorable experiences with waxing was truly because of the inexperience of the professional. We can assure you that although there is really no such thing as a "pain free" wax, your service will in no way be unbearable.

  • Often asked is "What type of wax we use?" - Our founder has created a very specific formulation of professional use luxury depilatory waxes designed to be both gentle yet effective.  We use both soft (strip) wax and hard (stripless) wax to provide optimal results and remove all hair types from fine to coarse.

AFTER

  • REDNESS -It is normal for your skin to show redness after waxing. Some skin is more sensitive than others and reactions may range from no redness at all to very red. The first time you wax an area, or if it has been a while since your last waxing, you will probably experience some redness and sensitivity afterwards. This usually subsides within a few hours, or for very sensitive skin within 24 hours.

  • DO NOT sunbathe for 24 hours before or after your treatment. Tanning after your treatment can cause irritation and even burns.

  • No swimming pool, hot tubs or sauna for 24 hours after waxing.

  • Don’t use any products on the waxed area until the following day unless they are treatment products.

  • DO NOT exfoliate immediately after your service (the day of). Wait at least 24-48 hrs depending on skin's sensitivity following waxing.

  • Exfoliate skin daily - Light exfoliating with our Body By LA - Brown Sugar Body Scrub or Body By LA - Dry Brush is the perfect way to maintain your skin between appointments. Exfoliating has great benefits including removing dead skin cells that block the hair follicle which is the unfortunate cause of ingrown hairs.

  • For optimal results, regular maintenance for body waxing is necessary. We recommend waxing every 4-6 weeks after the initial wax.
